Biological Soil/Compost Analysis

We offer biological analyses of Soil Food Web microorganisms using methods and biological requirements for each stage of succession developed by Dr. Elaine Ingham.

  • Full Soil/Compost Biology Assessment($85) includes fungal & bacterial biomass, protozoa & nematodes counts, fungal to bacterial (F:B) ratio and comparison with recommended ranges for desired/present plant or requirements for bio-complete compost. An automatically generated report includes an additional interpretation and explanation of numbers in the Notes section.
  • Quick Soil/Compost Biology Assessment($50) is performed using the same observation techniques but without quantification and provides general description and estimation of microorganisms observed in your sample (qualitative assessment).

All reports provide information on the diversity of microorganisms, presence of disease-causing bacteria and fungi, root-feeding nematodes and other organisms indicating anaerobic/reduced oxygen conditions. Microscope pictures are also included. Learn more about quantitative and qualitative assessment in our Soil Test Guide

These consultations focus exclusively on the subject of composting. I can help you choose and set up a new composting system or resolve issues with your current one. Based on your specific situation we can discuss some of the following:

  • Specifics of different compost systems (backyard composting, vermiculture, thermophylic piles etc) and what type of composting fits best into your circumstances.
  • Compost techniques for a compost practice of your choice (feedstocks, ratios, moisture, temperature, turning)

  • How to use compost effectively in your garden/farm

By the end of the session you will have clarity and a customized action plan to improve the quality of your compost!
